COUPLES · CURIOSITY OVER ASSUMPTIONS
Make room for each other
Knowing someone well can make it easy to fill in their answer before they have finished speaking. A conversation game offers a small reason to ask again. The aim is to hear how your partner sees things today, even when the subject seems familiar.
Pick a time when both of you want to play. An invitation such as ‘Would you like to try two questions after dinner?’ leaves room for a real yes or no. If either of you is busy, tired or unwilling, choose another moment.
Agree on the shape of the conversation
Choose Couples and share one screen. BTW’s current beta supports taking turns together; it does not create a remote room or synchronize two devices. If you are on a call, one person can read the questions aloud.
Agree that passing needs no explanation and that you will ask before offering advice. A useful starting boundary is ‘We can talk about ourselves without speaking for each other.’ Choose Level 1 even if you have been together for years.
Take one answer at a time
Read a question and let one person finish before the other starts. You do not have to match the length or emotional depth of your partner’s answer. A short, everyday answer belongs in the conversation too.
While listening, resist the urge to supply the missing detail, correct the story or connect everything to a previous disagreement. If you do not understand something, ask about the words they used rather than guessing what they mean.
Notice differences without scoring them
You might answer the same question in different ways. One person may feel restored by company, while the other wants a quiet evening. Treat those answers as information about two people, not evidence that one of you cares more.
A reflection can be as simple as ‘That was new to me.’ Avoid deciding what your partner’s answer reveals about their personality or the future of the relationship. BTW does not diagnose compatibility.
Choose the next level together
At a level break, ask whether you both want to continue. The person who wants a lighter pace does not need to defend it. If a question opens a disagreement you do not want to have now, skip it or end the session.
Finishing after two questions is a complete choice. You could each name something you appreciated hearing and then return to your evening. Keep what was shared private unless you have permission to pass it on.
For another session, let the other person choose the moment. An enjoyable conversation should be something both people can freely choose again.
YOUR PACE, ALWAYS
Let a question be the beginning.
