FAMILY · FOR ADULT PLAYERS
See family with fresh eyes
Families often have familiar stories about who everyone is: the organised one, the quiet one, the person who always makes people laugh. A conversation can give someone room to describe themselves beyond that familiar role.
BTW’s Family mode is currently for adults. The question library has not been reviewed for children. Invite people individually and make sure everyone understands that answering is a choice.
Begin with the person here today
Choose Family and start at Level 1. Focus on everyday preferences and present experience before considering personal history. Asking what someone enjoys now may give a different answer from the one you remember.
Let each person speak for themselves. Try not to introduce an answer with ‘You’ve always been…’ or finish a sentence on their behalf. Even an affectionate label can make it harder to say something different.
Make room for different memories
If the conversation reaches the past, two people may remember the same occasion differently. You can acknowledge that difference without turning the question into a contest over whose account is the official one.
Stay with the experience a person chooses to describe. A useful response might be ‘I didn’t know that was how you experienced it.’ You do not have to settle a family disagreement within the game.
Respect a boundary the first time
If someone passes, accept it and continue. Avoid asking another person to explain the answer for them. Family closeness does not remove the right to keep something private.
Choose a level together and stop if anyone wants to finish. A deeper level is an option, not a measure of how close your family is. For a first session, two light questions may be plenty.
If a difficult issue needs a separate conversation, leave space for that to happen outside the game, with the people involved choosing when and how. BTW is not a way to make someone discuss something they have declined.
Leave the conversation open
You can end by naming one ordinary thing you learned: a new interest, a place someone likes or a way they enjoy spending a free afternoon. That detail may be an invitation for a future conversation without becoming a promise or demand.
When sharing the game with another relative, send the public question or game link. Let the people who played decide whether their answers travel with it.
The next time you play, ask again with curiosity. People can change their preferences, their words and their minds. That is part of what makes another conversation worthwhile.
YOUR PACE, ALWAYS
Let a question be the beginning.
Choose your mode and begin gently. There is no account to create and no answer to submit.
